APP Wild
Eric Hinman Has SoHo in His Pocket
Story by Debra Kronowitz
Eric Hinman, co-founder of
AppFury.com and owner of Hinman & Associates, a property and casualty
insurance broker, is enjoying life at 29. Hinman is the iPhone app
developer of SOHOinmypocket and MIDTOWNinmypocket,
location-based navigation apps that inform users of what’s around them
and how to get there.
Hinman and his partner created the app out of frustration. “We had just
spent an exhausting day in SoHo, of which more time was spent walking
around and asking for directions than enjoying the world-class shopping,
restaurants and cultural gems. Over much deserved drinks, we joked about
having the neighborhood and all it has to offer neatly organized on our
phone. There would be no more need to ask strangers for directions –
forget walking in the wrong direction only to retrace your steps. That
light hearted conversation spawned the early concept that slowly evolved
into SOHOinmypocket,” he said.
Featured by Apple as “new and noteworthy,” Hinman and his partner have
created other inmypocket apps for
major cities; these apps are expected to roll out in the near future. |

Focused with a drive and determination to
succeed, Hinman is the epitome of the Gen Y entrepreneur – young, smart
and brash. Like others in this generation, Hinman wants to work, but
doesn’t let work be his life. Competitive by nature, he loves building
businesses. “It’s so much fun to take an idea and develop it. I love
being an entrepreneur, ”he said.
Hinman grew up in Upstate New York, and still resides there. He credits
his parents for instilling their strong work ethic on him at an early
age and admires founders from the tech world and social media. He
describes himself as competitive and good natured. “I can be sarcastic
and a jokester at times, but I am competitive by nature.”
He has a passion for outdoor sports – boating, tennis, hiking, mountain
biking, road biking. “I just started getting into triathlons. I love it,
it’s a new challenge!” he exclaimed.
He enjoys the simple things in life, including hanging out with friends,
travel and fine dining. “I haven’t traveled the world yet, but I really
enjoy Scottsdale, AZ, for its look and feel and abundance of
restaurants. My favorite city is New York; there is so much to do. The
city never sleeps, it’s always on,” he continued.
With “no clue how to cook,” Hinman enjoys eating. “Italian, Japanese…
anything Asian inspired is my favorite,” he added. Not much of a book
reader, Hinman enjoys reading business-related articles, the
Wall Street Journal and an array of
articles on his iPad.
A determined, focused and likable young man, Hinman definitely has his
eye on the ball. “I want to start more profitable businesses, develop
relationships and enjoy every second of it,” he said. “I want to keep
winning.”
